What is Horsepower?

Horsepower is a phrase we are all familiar with. Most car commercials mention it in some fashion when advertising a vehicle. What exactly is "horsepower" though?

An engineer by the name of James Watt invented the idea, and it is measured in "watt" measurements. Horsepower began as a means to test how fast steam engines were in comparison to draft horses. As the years continued and technology grew, so did the meaning of horsepower. It evolved to test the output of all different types of mechanical vehicles, no longer comparing it to horses.

So how does horsepower come into play when shopping for a vehicle? Well the power and torque of a car is very important to a lot of people when shopping, and can be the difference between a purchase.
